Reports and appeals
Draft. This text has not had its legal review yet and may change before Labyrinth ships in the app stores.
Last updated: October 9, 2026.
Labyrinth communities moderate themselves. A report goes to the community’s own admins first. Only a report they leave unhandled comes to the Labyrinth safety team, and the first thing we do is tell the community’s admins. What is and is not allowed is in the Community Policy.
1. Report it in the community
Long-press a message, a post or a member and choose Report. Pick a category and add a note if you like. The report is sealed so that only the community’s moderators, and you, can read it. It never comes to us.
You can also block the person, mute words, and blur media, all on your own device.
2. Escalate it to us
If the community does not handle your report, the Labyrinth apps from the App Store, Google Play and the Mac App Store (the “store apps”) offer Escalate to the Labyrinth safety team on the report:
- once the report has waited unresolved for its category’s time (the table below);
- at once, if nobody in the community could read your report when you filed it;
- at once, if the community marked it resolved and you disagree.
Before anything is sent, the app shows you exactly what will go: the community, the category, your note, and the text excerpts you choose. No escalation ever carries images, video or other media. What we keep, and for how long, is in the privacy policy.
The app keeps a private key for your case on your device, so you can see what happens to it: escalated, on notice, the community says it is resolved, closed, suspended.
The community’s admins are not told who escalated. They may still be able to guess, because they hold the report you filed in the community.
3. Notice to the community’s admins
We log each case within 24 hours. If it needs action, the first step always reaches the community’s admins: we put the community on notice. Its admins and moderators see the notice in the app, with the category, the deadline and the case. Nothing else changes for the community, and other members see nothing.
Our staff never contact or join the community at this step.
4. The admins respond
The admins can respond from the app with a statement and evidence, and say whether the issue is resolved. The app proves to us that the person responding holds an admin or moderator role in that community.
- If the issue is resolved and the evidence shows it, we close the case.
- If you reported it and you disagree that it is resolved, you can reopen the case from the app. A reopened case suspends the community.
- A response that does not resolve the issue leaves the notice running.
5. Suspension
If the deadline passes and the issue is not resolved, or a resolved case is reopened, the community is suspended from the store apps. On a store app it then shows:
This community is not accessible from this device as it runs against Labyrinth’s Community Policy.
The store apps stop connecting to it, and cannot join it or open an invite to it. Nothing is deleted: the community’s data stays on members’ devices, so reinstatement is instant.
6. Appeal and reinstatement
The admins of a suspended community can appeal from the app, with a statement, evidence, and, if they choose, an invite for the member of staff who reviews it. This is the only time our staff join a community: to review a reinstatement, through that invite. They look, and they leave.
If the issue is resolved, we reinstate the community. Store apps pick up the change the next time they check, usually within a day.
Timings
| Category | You may escalate | Notice before suspension |
|---|---|---|
| Child safety (child sexual abuse material, grooming or enticement, child trafficking) | at once | none: suspended when we log the case |
| Intimate images shared without consent, intimate deepfakes | at once | 24 hours |
| Violence and threats; self-harm | after 24 hours | 72 hours |
| Everything else (spam, harassment, hate, sexual content, impersonation, illegal content, other) | after 72 hours | 7 days |
A reopened case suspends at once, in every category. These timings can change; this page will say when they do.
Child safety
Choose Child safety when you report. You can escalate at once, and you should also report directly to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s CyberTipline at report.cybertip.org. Never send anyone the images, us included. If a child is in immediate danger, call your local emergency number (911 in the United States).
A credible child safety case suspends the community from the store apps as soon as we log it. We report to the CyberTipline as the law requires. Our child safety standards say more.
Intimate images: TAKE IT DOWN requests
If an intimate image or video of you, or a deepfake of you, was shared without your consent, choose Intimate images when you report, and escalate at once. The app collects what a valid removal request under the TAKE IT DOWN Act needs:
- your signature (typing your full name is enough);
- what identifies the image, and where it is, so it can be found;
- a short statement that you believe in good faith it was shared without your consent;
- how to contact you.
We timestamp the request when it arrives. Within 48 hours we pass it to the community’s admins, who can remove it, with a 24 hour notice; if it is not removed, the community is suspended from the store apps. We do not hold community content, so we cannot remove it ourselves.
If you cannot use the app, email the same four things to safety@labyrinth.chat with “TAKE IT DOWN request” in the subject, and the name of the community or an invite link to it if you have one.
These free services can also help stop an image spreading on other platforms: Take It Down for images taken when you were under 18, and StopNCII.org for adults.
If you are in crisis
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, call your local emergency number. In the United States you can call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, at any time.
